“In position, Gideon?” Sawyer whispered into his Bluetooth earpiece as he crouched farther behind a parked car in the lot next to the warehouse and peeked through the chain link fence. He was running tactical operations for Kai this go around, in addition to his technical expertise for the team. Kai had said Sawyer still needed more time to cool down after Hayden’s abduction, and his team leader was probably right. Because right now, his top priority was tearing Bex Monroe to shreds, which wouldn’t help when it came to interrogating the guy, so… He sighed and squinted across the alleyway to the front of the building. “Looks like we’ve got our target locked at six.”

“Roger.” Gideon said over the connection. “Nico, you got me covered?”

“Like a glove.” The answer was followed by the sound of a bullet chambering into Nico’s sniper rifle.

“Listen up, team,” Kai said. “The plan is to get in, grab Liam, and get out. Understand?”

“Yes, sir,” all the guys said in unison.

“For Ryker,” Sawyer whispered and crossed himself.

“For Ryker,” his teammates responded in unison over the Bluetooth.

Beside him, Hayden sat with his back against the vehicle’s tire, his laptop open. He’d tapped into some satellite feed and kept them posted on the overhead surveillance, so they knew who was arriving and when.

Through his Steiner military binoculars, Sawyer tracked Liam McCallister as he made his way down the sidewalk toward the vacant warehouse. He looked thinner than the last time Sawyer had seen him, paler and more fragile too. But then if your husband had been killed and you were faking your own death to cover your suspected treason against the United States, you’d probably looked like shit too.

Liam stuffed something into his pocket then hurried across the street between traffic to the warehouse entrance.

“How well did you know Liam?” Hayden asked. “Before he married Ryker.”

Sawyer shrugged. “We’d met a few times socially. Why?”

Hayden typed more, scowling at his computer screen. “You know about his criminal record then?”

Now it was Sawyer’s turn to scowl. “No.”

Before he could ask more, the connection crackled and Gideon said, “I’m going in. See you on the other side.”

Sawyer adjusted his binoculars and followed Gideon’s progress and said to Hayden, “Can we talk about this later?”

“It’s just weird,” Hayden continued as if he hadn’t heard. “From what I’ve found, Liam basically disappeared around age fourteen, then reappeared on the grid at age twenty-two, working as a waiter at a bar in Georgetown. No record of anything in between. Nothing.”

Yeah. That was strange.

Unease niggled in Sawyer’s gut over what Hayden had just told him. Maybe they should have paid more attention to Liam. From the first meeting, the guy had come across as a bit closed off and distant, but Sawyer had taken it as shyness. But later, he’d seen Liam working at the bar and he seemed to handle himself very adeptly around the rowdy, drunken pub. In fact, he’d once seen Liam take out a man twice his size without breaking a sweat or causing any injury to the patron.
